TV Channel Overview
GRTS (Gambia Radio and Television Services) is The Gambia’s national public
broadcaster, based in Kanifing. Its television and radio services serve
audiences across the country, combining news and current affairs with educational,
cultural, public-interest, sports, and general programming.
The organization developed from the country’s earlier public radio service. Radio Gambia began broadcasting in 1962, while GRTS was officially commissioned in 1995 as television broadcasting was added to the national service.
GRTS TV is the organization’s television service. Its output includes national news bulletins, current affairs, weather information, political and public-institution coverage, sports, culture, education, agriculture, environmental topics, local government, and other features on Gambian society. The television service also covers national events and public-interest issues, reflecting GRTS’s responsibilities as the country’s public-service broadcaster. A separate Director of TV Programmes oversees television programming, while radio programming is managed through its own directorate.
GRTS maintains separate television and radio services, with GRTS TV serving as its television service and National Radio continuing the country’s public radio tradition. English is used alongside Gambian languages in GRTS broadcasting, reflecting the country’s multilingual media environment.
