TV Channel Overview
Radiotélévision du Niger (RTN) is Niger’s national public broadcasting organization, headquartered in Niamey. Its institutional roots extend to Radio Niger, established in 1958, and the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision du Niger (ORTN), created in 1967. ORTN adopted the name Radiotélévision du Niger in 2022. RTN operates public television and radio services, including Télé Sahel, Tal TV, and the national radio service Voix du Sahel, while regional radio stations contribute locally produced material from different parts of the country. Its public-service mission encompasses information, education, entertainment, national cohesion, and the preservation of Niger’s cultural heritage.
Niger’s public television history predates the current RTN structure. Experimental educational television began in 1964, and Télé Sahel started daily broadcasting in 1988. As RTN’s national television channel, Télé Sahel carries news and public affairs alongside sports, documentaries, cultural subjects, and general entertainment. French is used together with national languages; Hausa-language news remains part of the service, while French, Hausa, and Zarma have also been used in televised news and public-information programming.
Tal TV was launched in 2001 as a second television service with a youth-oriented role centered on Niamey. Its schedule now extends beyond youth programming, combining entertainment and animated content with news, documentaries, magazines, interviews, health and religious programs, films, and theater. This gives Tal TV a broader general-interest profile while retaining content for younger audiences.
RTN also includes a public digital proximity television service intended for Niamey and the surrounding area. Together with its regional radio operations, these services give the organization both a national broadcasting role and a local dimension within Niger’s public media system.
