TV Channel Overview
TVO is Ontario's publicly funded English-language educational television
service and media organization, headquartered in Toronto. Formally the
Ontario Educational Communications Authority, it is an agency of the Ontario
Ministry of Education and serves audiences throughout the province.
Established in 1970, TVO combines an educational mandate with public-interest media. Its television programming covers current affairs, documentaries, children's education, and factual subjects such as history, science, nature, culture, and social issues. Journalism produced under TVO Today focuses strongly on Ontario politics, public policy, communities, and other issues affecting the province.
Education extends beyond the broadcast schedule. TVO develops curriculum-linked learning resources for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 and operates the Independent Learning Centre, which provides secondary-school courses and diploma pathways. The television service remains part of this broader educational mission, alongside TVO's journalism and documentary work. Within Canada's media landscape, TVO has a province-wide role focused on Ontario, linking public-interest television with educational resources designed for learners and families across the province.
