TV Channel Overview
OMNI Television is a Canadian commercial broadcaster devoted to multilingual
and multicultural programming. Operated by Rogers Sports & Media, it
includes local over-the-air stations in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and
Toronto, together with OMNI Regional, a national multilingual and multi-ethnic
television service.
The schedule combines news and current affairs with entertainment and other
general-interest programming. Content appears in many languages, including
Arabic, Cantonese, Filipino, Italian, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Punjabi.
National newscasts and regional programming address the information and
cultural interests of Canada's ethnocultural communities. Regional advisory
councils provide another connection between OMNI and the communities served
in different parts of the country.
Toronto's CFMT-TV, now OMNI.1, began broadcasting in 1979 as a multilingual station, and Rogers acquired it in 1986. OMNI later expanded beyond Toronto, while OMNI Regional added a national component to its regional television operations. Within Canada's television system, this structure combines local broadcasting with a nationwide multilingual service focused on news, current affairs, entertainment, and culturally relevant programming.
