Overview
CCTV (China Central Television / 中国中央电视台) is the national television broadcaster
of China and operates as part of China Media Group (CMG / 中央广播电视总台). Headquartered
in Beijing, the organization manages a large group of television channels
covering news, current affairs, culture, entertainment, sports, documentaries,
education, agriculture, military-related programming, children’s content,
and regional affairs. Established in 1958, CCTV has developed into one
of the country’s largest broadcasting organizations, providing nationwide
television services through terrestrial, satellite, cable, and digital
distribution platforms.
The CCTV network operates a wide range of specialized channels identified mainly as CCTV-1 through CCTV-17. CCTV-1 serves as the flagship general channel, while CCTV-2 focuses on finance and business reporting. CCTV-3 is dedicated primarily to arts and entertainment programming, and CCTV-4 provides international Chinese-language programming. CCTV-5 and CCTV-5+ are sports-oriented services, while CCTV-6 specializes in films and cinema-related content. Other channels include CCTV-7 for national defense and agriculture-related programming, CCTV-8 for drama series, CCTV-9 for documentaries, CCTV-10 for science and education, CCTV-11 for Chinese opera, CCTV-12 for legal and social affairs topics, CCTV-13 for rolling news coverage, CCTV-14 for children’s programming, CCTV-15 for music, CCTV-16 for Olympic and sports-related programming, and CCTV-17 for agriculture and rural affairs content. In addition to domestic services, the organization also operates multilingual international media services through the CGTN brand.
The network remains one of China's principal national broadcasting organizations, maintaining a broad range of television services covering news, education, culture, sports, entertainment, and public affairs.
