TV Channel Overview
MBC (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation / 문화방송) is a South Korean public broadcaster
headquartered in Mapo District, Seoul. It began radio broadcasting in 1961
and launched television broadcasting in 1969. Its principal terrestrial
television service, MBC TV, offers a general-interest schedule spanning
news and current affairs, documentaries, drama, entertainment, sports,
and cultural programming.
MBC TV forms the core of the broadcaster’s nationwide television network. The Seoul headquarters works with 16 regional MBC companies, which produce local news, information, and cultural programs for their respective areas while participating in the wider MBC network. This structure combines nationwide programming with regionally produced broadcasting across South Korea.
MBC’s television activities also extend beyond its terrestrial network. Subsidiary MBC PLUS operates five specialty pay-TV channels: MBC every1, centered on variety and entertainment; MBC Sports+, devoted to sports; MBC Dramanet, focused on drama; MBC ON, featuring drama and variety programming from different periods of MBC’s television history; and MBC M, oriented toward music and entertainment. MBC also began terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) in 2005, adding another form of digital broadcasting to its television and radio operations.
MBC was established as a private commercial broadcaster, but its ownership and public-service structure changed during the 1980s. The Foundation for Broadcast Culture, created under a special law in 1988, became MBC’s controlling shareholder and supervisory body. Today, MBC combines public-service broadcasting, regional production, general-interest terrestrial television, radio, and affiliated specialty channels within a broader media group.
