TV Channel Overview
Hrvatska radiotelevizija (HRT / Croatian Radiotelevision) is Croatia’s national public service broadcaster, headquartered in Zagreb. Its television operation consists of four national terrestrial channels—HRT – HTV 1, HRT – HTV 2, HRT – HTV 3, and HRT – HTV 4—plus HRT International (HRT Int.), a separate international television channel. HRT also runs national and regional radio services and a network of regional centers across the country. Its broadcasting history reaches back to Radio Zagreb, launched in 1926, and Television Zagreb, which began in 1956. The organization adopted its present name in 1990.
The television channels have distinct roles within the public-service system. HTV 1 carries a broad general schedule with news, current affairs, drama, entertainment, culture, and other public-interest programming. HTV 2 complements the main channel with general programming and a strong presence of sports. HTV 3 is oriented toward culture, arts, education, science, documentaries, and related programming, while HTV 4 is centered on news and information. HRT International is intended for Croatians living outside Croatia and for an international audience, drawing on HRT programming for viewers abroad.
Alongside the Croatian-language programming that forms the core of its national television services, HRT has responsibilities for content serving national minorities, including programs in minority languages. Its regional centers contribute reporting and production from different parts of Croatia. HRT’s public mandate also covers cultural and linguistic diversity, Croatian cultural heritage, education, democratic and social issues, accessibility for people with hearing or visual impairments, and services connecting Croatia with Croatian communities abroad.
