Yle (Yleisradio Oy; Swedish: Rundradion Ab) is Finland’s national public
service media company, headquartered in Helsinki. Founded in 1926, it operates
nationwide television, radio, news, and digital media services under a
public-service mandate defined by Finnish law. Its television services
are organized around Yle TV1, Yle TV2, and the shared Yle Teema & Fem
channel.
Yle TV1 is the organization’s main general-interest television channel. It gives substantial space to national and international news, current affairs, factual programming, documentaries, drama, cultural content, and coverage of major public events. The channel serves as a primary outlet for Yle’s journalism and public-affairs television.
Yle TV2 has a broader entertainment and events profile, with sports, live broadcasts, drama, entertainment, children’s and youth programming, and other general-interest content. Its schedule complements TV1 by placing greater emphasis on shared events, popular entertainment, and programming for younger audiences.
Yle Teema & Fem combines two distinct strands on one television channel. Teema concentrates on culture, documentaries, films, music, science, history, and educational programming. Fem provides Swedish-language television for Finland’s Swedish-speaking population, including news, current affairs, culture, entertainment, drama, and children’s content.
Across its wider public-service operation, Yle produces content not only in Finnish and Swedish but also in Sámi languages and several other languages used in Finland. Its television channels therefore combine nationwide general programming with cultural, educational, linguistic, and minority-oriented services.
