TV Channel Overview
MTV3 is a national private general-interest television channel operated by MTV Oy and based in Helsinki, Finland. The channel began broadcasting under the MTV3 name in 1993, when MTV gained its first television channel of its own after decades of commercial programming carried through Yle’s network. MTV Oy’s television history dates to 1957, but MTV3 itself dates from 1993.
Finnish-language news and current affairs are a regular part of the schedule, alongside locally produced entertainment, drama, reality and lifestyle formats, films, and selected sports coverage. The channel also carries international series and other acquired programming, giving its schedule a mix of domestic productions and imported content for a broad national audience.
Within Finland’s television system, MTV3 is a private national channel rather than a public broadcaster. Finnish communications regulator Traficom also designates it as a public-interest television channel, which brings nationwide availability and accessibility requirements in mainland Finland. This regulatory position, combined with its general-interest format, places MTV3 among Finland’s nationwide commercial television services.
