TV Channel Overview
Sveriges Television (SVT) is Sweden’s national public service television
company, headquartered in Stockholm. Public-service television in Sweden
began regular broadcasting in 1956, and SVT today operates a group of national
channels with different editorial and audience roles.
SVT1 has a broad general-interest schedule that includes news, current affairs, drama, entertainment, factual programs, talk shows, and sports. SVT2 places greater emphasis on culture, society, documentaries, and factual programming, and also carries programs in Sweden’s national minority languages.
SVT Barn is an advertising-free children’s channel for audiences from preschool age through the teenage years. It shares a channel slot with SVT24, which is used mainly for repeats, supplementary broadcasts, accessibility versions of programs, and selected sports coverage.
Kunskapskanalen, operated jointly with the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company (UR), focuses on history, science, nature, documentaries, and educational factual programming.
SVT also produces regional news for audiences across Sweden. Most output is in Swedish, while its public-service responsibilities include content in Finnish, Sámi, Meänkieli, Romani Chib, Yiddish, and Swedish Sign Language. SVT and UR decided in 2026 to end Kunskapskanalen as a separate linear channel at the end of that year and integrate its factual programming into other public-service offerings.
