TV Channel Overview
UR (Sveriges Utbildningsradio AB, commonly known as Utbildningsradion)
is a Swedish public service media company based in Stockholm and devoted
specifically to education and learning. It forms part of Sweden’s public
service broadcasting system alongside Sveriges Television (SVT) and Sveriges
Radio (SR).
Established in 1978, UR produces television and radio programs for schools, educators, children, young people, adults, and the general public. Its educational remit covers material designed to support and supplement teaching as well as programs intended to broaden general knowledge. Subjects range across school learning, languages, society, history, science, and factual documentaries, with journalism and pedagogy combined according to the needs of different audiences.
UR also has responsibilities toward Sweden’s national minorities. It produces programs in Finnish, Yiddish, Meänkieli, Romani Chib, and Sami, as well as Swedish Sign Language. Swedish is widely used across its programming, while additional languages appear in educational and language-learning content. Within Sweden’s public service television environment, UR also cooperates with SVT in operating Kunskapskanalen, a channel centered on knowledge and educational content.
