TV Channel Overview
ITV is a commercial television network in the United Kingdom, with most of the regional Channel 3 licenses held by subsidiaries of ITV plc, based in London. The network began in 1955 with the launch of commercial television in the UK and developed through a regional franchise structure. Channel 3 remains part of the country’s public service broadcasting system, with regional news and other obligations applying across its licensed areas. STV Group holds the Channel 3 licenses for central and northern Scotland, while ITV plc subsidiaries hold the other regional licenses.
ITV1 is the group’s main general-interest channel, carrying drama, entertainment, factual programs, news, current affairs, daytime programming, and sport. Regional news remains an identifiable part of the Channel 3 service, reflecting the network’s geographic structure. ITV also operates several national digital channels with more focused schedules. ITV2 concentrates on entertainment, reality, comedy, and programming aimed particularly at younger adults. ITV3 is centered on British drama and archive programming, while ITV4 combines free-to-air sport with factual and entertainment content. ITV Quiz, launched in 2025 after the retirement of ITVBe, is devoted primarily to quiz and game-show programming.
