STV is a commercial public service television channel serving central and northern Scotland, with its headquarters at Pacific Quay in Glasgow. The service operates under two regional Channel 3 licenses, STV Central and STV North, held by subsidiaries of STV Group plc. These license areas form part of the wider UK Channel 3 network, while southern Scotland is covered separately by the ITV Border region.
The channel combines network programming with material produced specifically for Scottish audiences. Its schedule spans news and current affairs, drama, entertainment, factual programs, and sport. Regional journalism is a central part of STV’s television role, with reporting gathered from different parts of Scotland and separate regional elements maintained for the Central and North license areas.
STV traces its broadcasting history to Scottish Television, which began serving central Scotland in 1957, and Grampian Television, which launched in northern Scotland in 1961. The services came together under the STV brand in 2006, when the broadcaster also moved its Glasgow base to Pacific Quay.
STV Group’s television broadcasting operation centers on the main STV channel. It also operates STV +1, a one-hour time-shifted version of the channel. STV Central and STV North are regulatory license regions rather than separate consumer-facing channel brands. Alongside network programs, STV produces Scottish news, current affairs, and factual entertainment, giving the channel a distinct regional function within the UK’s commercial public service broadcasting system.
