S4C (Sianel Pedwar Cymru, meaning Channel Four Wales) is the United Kingdom’s
Welsh-language public service broadcaster, headquartered at Canolfan S4C
Yr Egin in Carmarthen, Wales. It began broadcasting in 1982, bringing Welsh-language
television into a single dedicated service. S4C now operates as a commissioning
broadcaster, with most of its programs made by independent production companies
in Wales.
The channel serves Welsh-speaking audiences with a general-interest schedule covering news and current affairs, drama, factual programs, documentaries, entertainment, music, children’s programming, and sport. Its public service role is closely tied to the Welsh language, while its commissioning model also connects S4C with the television production sector across Wales. BBC Cymru Wales supplies Welsh-language programming to S4C under the long-standing relationship between the two broadcasters.
S4C’s main linear television operation centers on the S4C channel itself rather than a group of separate general-interest channels. Within its children’s output, Cyw is aimed at younger children, while Stwnsh serves older children; both are services and programming brands within S4C rather than independent linear television channels.
