TV Channel Overview
Kuwait Television (KTV / تلفزيون الكويت) is Kuwait’s state television service, operated by the Ministry of Information
and based in Kuwait City. It consists of a group of general and specialized
channels rather than a single television service, covering news and public
affairs, culture, entertainment, sports, religion, heritage, and other
subjects.
Kuwait TV 1 is the main Arabic-language general channel, carrying a broad schedule that includes news, public affairs, cultural and social programs, drama, and entertainment. Kuwait TV 2 is the network’s English-language general channel, providing programming for English-speaking audiences in Kuwait and presenting Kuwaiti society, culture, and public life in English.
Al-Akhbar is the dedicated news channel, with news bulletins, interviews, discussion programs, and reporting on developments in Kuwait and abroad. Kuwait Sport focuses on sports coverage, including domestic competitions and the activities of Kuwaiti clubs and national teams, while Kuwait Sport Plus provides an additional channel for sports programming.
The network also maintains several channels with more specialized cultural roles. Al-Qurain concentrates on Kuwaiti heritage, television drama, archival productions, and programs recalling the country’s social and cultural history. Ithraa has a cultural and religious orientation, including Islamic educational programs and content dealing with religious knowledge and occasions. Al-Arabi emphasizes cultural, literary, educational, artistic, and documentary subjects, extending Kuwait Television’s coverage beyond general entertainment and daily news.
State television broadcasting in Kuwait began in 1961 from the Sharq area of Kuwait City. Color broadcasting followed in 1974, and the Ministry of Information’s media complex opened in central Kuwait City in 1979. Over time, the original television service developed into the present multi-channel state broadcasting system, with Arabic remaining the principal language and English having a distinct role through Kuwait TV 2.
