Television New Zealand (TVNZ) is a state-owned national television broadcaster
based at the TVNZ Television Centre in Auckland, New Zealand. Established
in 1980, TVNZ operates three principal television channels with distinct
programming roles: TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2, and TVNZ DUKE.
TVNZ 1 is New Zealand’s first television channel and places strong emphasis on national news and current affairs. Its schedule also includes documentaries, factual entertainment, and local and international drama. TVNZ 2 has a stronger entertainment focus, with programming aimed at families and younger audiences. TVNZ DUKE, launched in 2016, offers a different mix that includes sports, factual programs, comedy, drama, and films.
Across its television services, TVNZ combines locally produced and international programming. Its broadcast output also includes Māori-focused content and Māori perspectives within news and entertainment. The organization remains government-owned while operating on a commercial basis.
