TV Channel Overview
Whakaata Māori is New Zealand’s national Indigenous television broadcaster,
based in East Tāmaki, Auckland. It began broadcasting in 2004 as the Māori
Television Service and adopted the name Whakaata Māori in 2022. Its central
role is the protection and promotion of te reo Māori and Māori culture
through television programming in both te reo Māori and English.
The channel’s schedule reflects Māori perspectives on life in Aotearoa and includes documentaries, cultural and factual programs, drama, entertainment, children’s programming, and sports. Many programs are bilingual, while te reo Māori remains a defining part of the service. New Zealand law requires the broadcaster to present mainly te reo Māori during prime time and a substantial proportion of Māori-language programming at other times.
Whakaata Māori also works with independent producers, whānau, hapū, iwi, and communities in developing content connected to Māori language, identity, history, and contemporary experience. From its Auckland base, the broadcaster serves audiences throughout New Zealand and maintains a distinct national role in Indigenous television.
