TV Network Overview
NBC (National Broadcasting Company) is an English-language commercial national broadcast television network in the United States. Its national programming covers entertainment, news, sports, morning and late-night television, and special events. The network supplies programming for television markets across the country while maintaining distinct divisions and program areas associated with news, entertainment, sports, and major national events.
NBC’s programming heritage is closely connected with several long-running television formats. Meet the Press began in 1947 and has developed the longest history of any program on American television. Today, launched in 1952, established the network morning-show format and has held a long-standing place in NBC’s weekday morning schedule. Together, these programs reflect NBC’s sustained involvement in television news, public affairs, and morning programming alongside its broader entertainment and sports schedule.
At the local level, NBC network programming is carried by NBC-owned television stations and independently owned affiliates serving individual markets. These local broadcasters integrate the national schedule with programming created or selected for their own regions. Depending on the station and market, this can include local news, weather, investigative reporting, public affairs, community information, and other regional coverage. The result is a network structure in which nationally supplied NBC programs share the schedule with content produced for local audiences.
NBC was founded as a radio network in 1926 and established a permanent coast-to-coast radio network by 1928. Its early television experiments also began in the late 1920s, followed by television operations in New York and coverage of the 1939 New York World’s Fair. NBC’s New York television station received a commercial license in 1941, and by 1948 the NBC television network included dozens of stations. These developments established the foundations of NBC’s nationwide television network.
