TV Network Overview

PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) is a private, nonprofit membership organization serving public television in the United States. Its members are noncommercial educational television licensees operating more than 330 member stations across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa. PBS distributes national programming and provides services spanning education, children’s media, news and public affairs, science, history, nature, arts, culture, drama, and performance.

PBS member stations are independently owned and operated, and each station retains final authority over its own schedule. Stations select from programs distributed by PBS and may also produce local programs or acquire material from other sources. This gives local public television stations substantial editorial and scheduling independence while connecting them to national programming and educational resources. Local productions, public-affairs coverage, educational initiatives, and community services can therefore vary considerably from one member station to another.

Science and in-depth journalism are long-established areas of PBS programming. NOVA, produced by GBH, a Boston-based public media organization, and first broadcast in 1974, is a science documentary series exploring subjects across science and engineering, including space, nature, medicine, technology, and human origins. It has become one of PBS’s long-running signature science programs. PBS NewsHour traces its history to The Robert MacNeil Report, which began in 1975 and later developed through several formats and titles. The program presents national and international news, analysis, field reporting, interviews, and discussion, and has become one of the best-established news and public-affairs programs associated with American public television.

PBS was founded in 1969, and its national program service began in 1970. It developed to serve locally operated public television stations, with member stations remaining central to the organization and to the delivery of public television within their communities. This member-based structure links nationally distributed programs with independently managed stations serving local and regional audiences.
