Democracy Now! is a U.S.-based independent news and public affairs program produced in New York City by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit news organization of the same name. Hosted by journalists Amy Goodman and Juan González, the weekday program combines daily news headlines with in-depth interviews, analysis, and discussions on U.S. politics, international affairs, social and economic issues, human rights, environmental topics, and other current events.
The program regularly features journalists, researchers, activists, writers, and people directly involved in the events being discussed. Its extended interview format allows individual topics to be examined beyond the brief reports typically found in daily news summaries.
Democracy Now! began in 1996 as a public radio news program. Television broadcasts were added in 2001, extending the program to public, community, college, and other noncommercial television outlets while it continued on radio. Today, the program is carried by television and radio stations in the United States and abroad. It is supported by viewers and listeners and does not accept advertising, underwriting, or government funding.
