TV Channel Overview
NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation / 日本放送協会) is Japan’s public broadcaster,
headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo. Established under Japan’s Broadcasting
Act, it is funded primarily through receiving fees, a system intended to
support its financial and editorial independence. NHK traces its broadcasting
origins to radio service begun in 1925, while regular television broadcasting
started in 1953.
For domestic television, NHK operates nationwide terrestrial services including NHK General TV and NHK Educational TV (Eテレ), together with satellite channels such as NHK BS, NHK BS Premium 4K, and NHK BS8K. Its programming spans news and current affairs, education, documentaries, culture, science, drama, music, sports, children’s programs, and emergency information. Regional stations across Japan also produce local news and programs for their respective areas.
NHK’s international broadcasting is provided through NHK WORLD-JAPAN, which reports on Japan and Asia for audiences overseas and offers content in English and other languages. Across its domestic and international services, NHK combines nationwide public-service broadcasting with regional reporting, educational programming, cultural content, and disaster-related information.
