commercial television broadcaster headquartered in Akasaka, Minato, Tokyo,
Japan. Its terrestrial service covers the Kanto region, while TBS also
serves as the key station of the Japan News Network (JNN), linking affiliated
broadcasters across the country.
TBS traces its television broadcasting history to 1955, when its predecessor, Radio Tokyo, began regular television service. JNN was formed in 1959, creating a nationwide structure for news gathering and reporting. Today, the network connects 28 affiliated television stations, with reporting also supported by overseas bureaus.
The station maintains a general-interest schedule built around news and current affairs, television drama, variety and entertainment, sports, and information programs. Drama occupies regular slots in the weekly schedule, while TBS also produces national news and other programs distributed through the JNN network.
