Nippon TV (NTV / 日本テレビ), formally Nippon Television Network Corporation
(日本テレビ放送網株式会社), is a private commercial television broadcaster headquartered
in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. It began broadcasting in 1953 as Japan’s first
commercial television broadcaster. Around the start of service, the company
installed street television sets across the Kanto region, and sports coverage
was part of its output from the station’s earliest days.
Today, Nippon TV’s terrestrial service is centered on the Kanto region. Nationally, it serves as the key station for NNN, which coordinates news among affiliated broadcasters, and NNS, which distributes programs through the network. Its schedule combines news and current affairs with variety and entertainment, drama, music, films, anime, sports, and information programs.
Sports remain a visible part of Nippon TV’s programming, including baseball, football, rugby, and other competitions. Through NNN and NNS, the station also connects its Tokyo-based production and reporting with regional broadcasters across Japan, combining metropolitan broadcasting with nationwide news coordination and program distribution.
