TV Network Overview

Univision is a Spanish-language commercial national broadcast television network in the United States. Its national schedule spans news, entertainment, sports, telenovelas, reality and competition programs, daytime television, and special events. The network serves Spanish-speaking audiences across the country through a combination of nationally distributed programming and local television stations operating in individual markets.

Local Univision stations connect the national network with communities in many U.S. cities and regions. Some stations are owned or operated by TelevisaUnivision, the media company that operates the Univision network, while others serve as independently owned affiliates. Alongside network programming, local stations may produce Spanish-language newscasts and coverage of regional, social, political, and community issues. This combination allows the national schedule to maintain a common identity while local broadcasters address the information needs of their own markets.

Several long-running programs reflect Univision’s role in Spanish-language television in the United States. Primer Impacto began in 1994 as a Spanish-language newsmagazine combining news and human-interest reporting. Despierta América followed in 1997 as a weekday morning program mixing news, interviews, entertainment, and lifestyle subjects. Their long histories illustrate Univision’s sustained involvement in daily news and magazine-style programming alongside sports and entertainment.

Univision’s roots extend to Spanish-language television stations established in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. Spanish International was formed in 1963 as a sales and programming organization for stations including KWEX in San Antonio and KMEX in Los Angeles, and it later developed into a national programming distributor. In 1976, the Spanish International Network connected affiliated stations by satellite for simultaneous broadcasts across the country. The network adopted the Univision name in 1987, continuing the development of a nationwide Spanish-language television service.
